The mayor of San Pedro Garza García, Mauricio Fernández, 73 years old, revealed on Friday, February 28, that he is fighting against cancer, an illness he has battled in the past. Fernández explained in the city council chamber that he is facing a difficult stage having to return to chemotherapy and immunotherapy, but he expressed optimism by stating that he will continue to fight as long as his body can withstand it.

The cancer that Mauricio Fernández suffers from is pleural mesothelioma, considered rare as it forms in the membrane covering the lungs. Despite the difficulty of the situation, the mayor remained positive, asserting that the disease is identified and has not spread to other areas. He expressed his determination to move forward, stating that work activities will help him face the illness.

Mauricio Fernández, who has been mayor of San Pedro four times, has been noted for his vigorous strategy against organized crime in his municipality, including the creation of a group to prevent the entry of criminals. Moreover, he has been a source of inspiration for series and documentaries. In 2022, Fernández announced that he had overcome cancer after receiving various treatments, asserting that his oncologist considered him cured after more than 30 sessions of radiation.
